This circa 1900 photograph shows the view looking up New Street from The Thoroughfare. The entrance to Castle Street and St Johns Hill is to the left of the three storey building with a semicircular frontage.

The first of the high explosive bombs, dropped by the Naval Zeppelin L10 on the 15th August 1915, caused extensive destruction to the entrance of Castle Street and  St Johns Hill.  The Castle can just be seen at the top of this photograph.
