Old Photographs of Woodbridge and Melton

 Riverside

Wilford bridge was built on the site of an old ford in 1530. It was not possible to ford the river below this point, so there were at least five ferries between Woodbridge and the sea.

In 1764 Wilford bridge was pulled down and replaced by a brick structure.   After problems became apparent the bridge was taken down again 1798 and rebuilt with white brick.

In 1939 the old bridge was declared unsafe and the road was closed whilst a new one was built at a different angle. Foundations of the old bridge were washed away in the flood of that year.

In 1950 the road approaching the bridge was straightened.
